Wegmans Empowers Team Members with Automated Remote Monitoring for Improved Food Safety Outcomes

Wegmans is strengthening food safety and operational resiliency across its 110 grocery stores and 100 retail pharmacies with SmartSense’s digital monitoring solutions. By automating temperature checks and delivering real-time alerts, SmartSense enables Wegmans’ teams to execute food safety programs reliably at scale while elevating efficiency and confidence.

My name is Mike Least. I work for Wegmans Food Markets. I'm the Food Safety Quality Assurance Systems Director. Food Safety Systems supports all the digital and technology solutions that we use to make food safety and quality assurance easy for our people. We use systems in our retail stores, in our distribution centers, in our manufacturing areas. And technology, we want to use to make it easy for people to do the right thing.

We have thousands of users responsible for executing food safety and quality programs, and getting this large population to do the same thing consistently is a challenge for us. Technology and software solutions help bring some consistency across that large population to allow us to execute those programs.

We're using SmartSense for the remote temperature monitoring solution, and prior to that, we had a large population doing manual temperature checks. So now with the technology and the digital solution, we're able to more automate that, take the manual step away, and feel confident that our cases and our products are being monitored, but also have the confidence that if something goes wrong, our people are going to be alerted, they can address it timely. We really enjoy working with the SmartSense team. They're responsive, attentive. I think some of what we've learned already with the Jolt partnership, they're answering the calls of problems or asks that we've brought up in the past, and it's great to see that trajectory.

90K+ sites continuously monitored

SmartSense by Digi manages more than 90K+ sites for leading brands in healthcare, retail, food service, education, and transportation and logistics.

Once we put in SmartSense, we found that there were a lot of small items in our refrigeration cases that we were able to fix because of alerts. A fan not working. Filters that were dirty. Just very small maintenance things that we could have done before it became an issue. So it really put us into a more proactive role rather than reactive.

We uncovered a large amount of issues with our refrigeration that we were then able to rectify.
